WHOT-FM:
The Aircheck Show - May 31, 1987
(128K stereo) |
|
A typically funny show from the
Spring of '87 is unexpectedly punctuated by a caller ("Fred from
Queens") that starts playing airchecks over the phone of Hank and Jim
that go back to the 1970s - all stuff that we don't have! Meanwhile,
there's a mystery DJ, Hank and Jim debate the need for a new studio
air conditioner and the usual insanity ensues. Hey Fred - e-mail me,
we need your stuff!

WFAT-AM:
The First Broadcast - December 31, 1977
(64K mono) |
|
Thirty years ago is when the
story really begins. It was thirty years ago today when the
legend really began. Hank and Jim signed on WFAT-AM as "Hal Hall" and
"Larry McRae" for the first time on New Year’s Eve 1977 - one month
later I'd hear the station - and the rest (as they say) is history.
WFAT went on to become one of the most well-known US land-based
pirates in radio history, and this is how is all began! To mark the
30th anniversary, we’re happy to present almost the entire show as it
originally aired. This is the start of something big – and it’s all
here right up until the tape ran out. At the end, we’ve tagged on
several extra minutes from a tape supplied by a listener in
Pennsylvania!

(64K mono) |

It's Turkey Time at The Hot One
in this rare, early aircheck! It's "crazy, crazy party" as Hank and
Jim also celebrate their 7th year in show business! Take a guess at
the Mystery Sound and get a special insight into a day in the life of
Hank and Jim from November of 1982!

WHOT-FM:
Memorial Day Show - May 24, 1987
(128K stereo) |
|
WHOT celebrates Memorial Day,
1987 in typical style. Jim and Pete hold down the fort until Hank and
Tommy Edison arrive. Terry Walker calls in, and plans are made to meet
up after the show at
Downtown Beiruts. Lessons are given
as to what Memorial Day is all about, and why MTV already stank in
1987. Hank and Tom do the show "Jimmy Swaggart"-style, and wonder what
happened to "the $5 from the pig". Hank has one of his very first
run-ins with Howard. Hank, Pete and Tom make a hasty exit to
rendezvous with Terry, and Jim takes over with an extended "Jingles on
Parade" as this tape ends. Good fun all around!

Radio
New York International: The Final Broadcast - July 27, 1987
(128K stereo) |
|
July 2007 marked the 20th
Anniversary of Radio New York International. To commemorate those five
crazy days back in July of 1987, we present the final RNI transmission
- Hank Hayes and Jim Nazium manning the helm for a six-hour test show
that aired the evening of July 27, 1987. This is just a taste of what
RNI could have been - fun, free-form entertainment, no formats, no
constraints. Since this was a "test", we get a lot of music - but a
lot of typical Hank and Jim insanity as well. Sadly, the dream would
come to an abrupt end less than six hours later when the FCC would
board The Sarah and shut RNI down for good.

Radio
New York International: Ivan Jefferies - July 26, 1987
(64K mono) |
|
July 2007 marked the 20th
Anniversary of Radio New York International. Here is a "lost" gem that
made it's way to us: Ivan Jefferies doing a late night show from
7-26-87. Randi Steele had been on earlier, and after midnight Allan
decided to sign off the 1620 AM signal and test a back-up AM
transmitter on 530 AM! Ivan is really having a ball here doing his
thing on the high seas. Note: at the start of this tape, you can hear
Allan and Ivan introducing reporter R.J. Smith of the Village Voice,
whose decision to stay on board The Sarah for a few days ended up
getting him arrested when the FCC ended the dream on the morning of
July 28, 1987. (This aircheck graciously supplied by RNI listener
Anthony Catalano)
